The term Novus Ordo is often used as shorthand to distinguish the Mass promulgated by Pope Paul VI in 1969 from the Traditional Latin Mass promulgated by Pope Pius V in 1570. When Paul VI's new Roman Missal (the liturgical book that contains the text of the Mass, along with the prayers for each celebration of the Mass) was released, it replaced the Traditional Latin Mass as the normal form of the Mass in the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church. Requiem Mass: Daily Mass for the Dead. ORDO MISSAE PRO DEFUNCTIS. The Order of Mass for the Dead in Latin and English. In the article is described the “Daily Mass for the Dead.” At a “The Requiem Funeral Mass,” additional rites and prayers are added according to the “Rituale Romanum” and the “Missale Romanum.”.

FromIsn't it fascinating how close some of the phrases and words are to the sublime and truly poetic version found in the Anglican Missal. Have the Roman Catholic authorities avoided using our superior Anglican Missal translations for the new English translation of the Novus Ordo simply because if they were to do so they might be perceived as lending credibility and legitimacy to our liturgical formulae, or even our liturgical patrimony vis-a- vis the Modern Roman Rite? They would have saved themselves much trouble and time by simply promulgating the Knott or Anglican Missals! In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.or —Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the LordJesus Christ.or —The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins, that we may be ready to celebrate the sacredmysteries.I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that Ihave sinned greatly in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and inwhat I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my mostgrievous fault. Therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels andSaints, and you my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.May almighty God have mercy on us and lead us, with our sins forgiven, into eternallife. Amen.Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.

Wepraise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for yourgreat glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ,Only-begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away thesins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receiveour prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. Foryou alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the MostHigh, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.A reading from the holy Gospel according to N.

Glory to you, O Lord. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.I believe in one God,the Father almighty, maker of heavenand earth, of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, theOnly-begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Lightfrom Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with theFather; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will comeagain in glory to judge the living and the dead. His kingdom will have no end. Andin the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father andthe Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spokenthrough the prophets.

And one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess onebaptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look forward to the resurrection of thedead and the life of the world to come.

Amen.Pray, brothers and sisters, that the sacrificewhich is mine and yours may be acceptable to God the almighty Father.May the Lord accept the sacrifice from your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just.Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God of hosts.

Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

This should really be written in Latin, so that as many people as possible will understand it, but since my blog is mostly inEnglish, I shall use that. Most of you will be used to a traditional Latin Mass (some, indeed, swear by the Sarum Rite and find the Tridentine chaps a littletoo modern), so the idea is to let you know what to expect if you stumble into a NO Mass by mistake.Men do it too. Prepare for the Mass by catching up on your gossip. Now, when you go into church for an EF Mass, you expect the congregation to be praying reverently, in total silence. For a NO Mass, the liturgy says that you should gossip with your neighbour until the priest arrives (which is sometimes as part of an impressiveprocession, involving deacons, altar servers, liturgical dancers, late-comers, people wanting their farm animals blessed, and so forth).Sorry, Father, I couldn't get a babysitter. Now, what should you gossip about? The Missal is somewhat vague on this point, but here are some good opening lines:1. I'm going to be taken off the sex-offenders register next week, you know.2. Ugh, you sneezed!

Have you got some loathsome disease?3. I heard that the deacon called you a skonk. What's a skonk?4. Warm today, isn't it? But then it was cold yesterday.I blame that carbon dioxide stuff. Have you got any in your garden?5.

Oh, is that a baby you're holding? I was going to give itsome peanuts.6. Let me finish this cheeseburger, and then we can have agood natter.Excitement mounts as the priest leaves the vestry.Well, in the NO it is quite usual to start with a hymn. Nothing written before 1965 is acceptable, butShine, shine in the Light, or I the Lord of Kum Bah will do nicely. Then the singingstops, the altar-servers pick their noses (boys) or do their make-up (girls), andthe priest is ready to speak!Kaixo eta ongietorri gure Igande goizean meza!Oh yes, I forgot to mention that the Mass will be in the local tongue of the people (in this case, Basque).

If you arelucky, the Missal will contain a parallel translation into Latin, but don't count on it.Je ne regrette rien - the French version of the Act of Penitence.Well, in the second instalment, we'll explain how to get through the bit that many people avoid by coming in late - the bitwhere we admit that we might possibly have sinned. Not seriously, of course. No worse than that horrible womantwo rows in front. But a little bit.

Maybe.Continued in.
